Stuart Lancaster Takes Over at Connacht, Eyes Ireland's Top Job

Stuart Lancaster has been named as Connacht's new Head Coach for a period of two years. He brings extensive top-tier coaching experience across all three principal European leagues and at an international level to the role.

Being positioned in Ireland and given his close relationship with the Leinster players who comprise the majority of the Central Contracted squad and the wider squad makes him a likely candidate to success Andy Farrell at Ireland post-RWC 2027.

The acquisition of Lancaster will be viewed as quite the triumph for David Humphreys, who is already facing challenges as the IRFU Director of Rugby.

The former Ireland out-half recently defunded the Sevens programme and has been accused of favouring Leinster with a consequential lack of support, particularly when it comes to financially boosting, the other provinces.

Furthermore, appointing the 55-year-old Lancaster brings instant advantages since he understands the culture and limitations faced by Westerners. Additionally, due to his tenure at Leinster from 2016 to 2023, he is acquainted with many of the players currently at the club.

Humphreys was keen on encouraging Leinster players to make both permanent transfers and loans to other provinces.

And he has been known to be critical of some players who wish to live in 'south Dublin' rather than strive for first team rugby elsewhere.

During his tenure in Ireland, Lancaster excelled at rebuilding his reputation after England’s poor showing in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, focusing primarily on individual player oversight.

He was highly involved with the Leinster Academy, a tracksuit coach with them, and almost universally liked by those players.

If he were to set up a Dublin-Galway 'loan' express route, securing players just below the Leinster first team squad for three-to-four-month stints, familiarizing them with his playbook, it would also prove beneficial.

At present, with Connacht’s full-back Santiago Cordero, wings Piers O’Conor, out-half JJ Hanrahan, and back-row player Conor Oliver all having contracts expiring or moving to another team, additionally, two wing players John Porch and Andrew Smith along with hooker Adam McBirney departed mid-season.

With coaching experience at Leinster, in England, and in France, Lancaster has built up an extensive contact list.

It’s quite likely that some of his initial calls will be to Rob Russell and/or Liam Turner, as they are being let go by Leinster.

For example, he could advocate for Academy out-half Caspar Gabriel to get a taste of first-team rugby at Dexcom Park since the Blues already have frontline Six Nations number 10s Sam Prendergast and Ciaran Frawley in their ranks.

Most recently, Lancaster was the Head Coach at Racing 92 in France. Prior to this role, he had an exceptionally successful seven-year tenure as the Senior Coach of Leinster Rugby. In his position overseeing the daily training sessions, he played a crucial part in guiding Leinster to win four successive PRO14 championships along with reaching four European Champions Cup finals, which included clinching victory in the 2018 final.

After spending four years as the head coach of the England national team, during which he oversaw four Six Nations tournaments and coached them through the 2015 Rugby World Cup hosted in his home nation, he transitioned to a position within Leinster. Prior to this appointment, he had served the RFU as the Head of Elite Player Development for four years, focusing primarily on nurturing young talent so they could excel both domestically and internationally.

Lancaster embarked on his coaching journey more than two decades ago when he took up the position of Head of Academy at Leeds RFU. In 2006, he was elevated to become the Head Coach for the Leeds Tykes, guiding them to their advancement into the English Premiership during his inaugural year in this role. Following another year as head coach, Lancaster moved on to join the RFU.

As the Head Coach, Lancaster will oversee the defensive aspects as well, thus rounding out next season’s coaching staff. He will be joined by new attack coach Rod Seib, scrum and contact skills coach Cullie Tucker, along with lineout and maul specialist John Muldoon.

I'm incredibly thrilled about joining Connacht Rugby and starting this fresh phase of my life in the west of Ireland alongside my wife, Nina," stated Lancaster, suggesting he may not shuttle between here and the UK like he did when he was associated with Leinster.

"Connacht is a club with a proud identity, a passionate supporter base, and enormous potential both on and off the field, so I’m honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity to lead the Professional Men’s team programme.

"I’m a firm believer in creating an environment that enables players to thrive and realise their potential, while playing a brand of rugby that inspires the community of which they represent. Ever since my initial conversations with Willie, David and the rest of the selection committee, it’s clear that same belief exists here in Connacht, and that’s why I’m so excited by this opportunity.

"There’s also the fantastic new facilities here at the new High-Performance Centre and Dexcom Stadium, which will further enable us to realise those goals.

I'm excited about collaborating closely with every member of the team and players, and I am eager to meet the supporters and broader community in the upcoming weeks and months.

Willie Ruane, the CEO of Connacht Rugby, states: "Stuart is among the most esteemed coaches in global rugby, and we are incredibly delighted to bring aboard an individual with his expertise. His history shows a commitment to nurturing young players, fostering a top-tier performance culture, and crucially, achieving victories and assisting teams in reaching their full potential."

His approach to coaching and his perspective on how the game ought to be played align seamlessly with our core values and aspirations.

Alongside Stuart, who will be working with the defense, we're just as enthusiastic about the recent hiring of Billy Millard as the General Manager of Performance and Rod Seib as our new attack coach. With the outstanding coaches we already have—Colm Tucker and John Muldoon—we feel confident that our coaching staff will provide our players with an ideal foundation to reach their full potential and accomplish the success we’re all aiming for together.

Following our recent move into the new High-Performance Centre, the upcoming year looks set to be one of the most significant in the club’s history. We will celebrate our 140th anniversary in December and anticipate the imminent conclusion of the Dexcom Stadium renovation project."

Naturally, there’s plenty to look forward to, and I’m confident that everybody will experience that same thrill and contribute to making this an unforgettable year.

The IRFU Performance Director, David Humphreys, comments: "Stuart is an exceptionally gifted coach who has demonstrated success in nurturing young athletes and establishing top-performing victorious squads. Throughout our selection process, it became evident how well-versed he is in Irish Rugby and how enthusiastic he is about it. This appointment will significantly energize rugby across Ireland."

Given the rapid progress being made behind the scenes regarding their updated infrastructure, this represents a major victory and a clear indication of Connacht Rugby’s ambitions. On behalf of the IRFU, I’m thrilled to greet Stuart as he returns to Ireland and to extend our best wishes for his performance in the upcoming seasons.

Lancaster will assume his new duties in time for pre-season training starting in July. He will also be introduced to the media and broader Connacht fan base next month.
