The GAA is launching a significant survey of its members as part of one of its largest-ever assessments of its amateur standing.

Uachtarán CLG Jarlath Burns established the Amateur Status Review Committee (ASRC) in March 2024 under the chair of former Derry Player Professor David Hassan and his team have been examining data and prior reports while evaluating the main hurdles the GAA encounters in safeguarding one of its most treasured principles.
An extensive survey and collection of member feedback have been decided upon as the initial steps.
The areas addressed include seeking input from targeted participants on their endorsement of setting up an oversight body that could possibly ensure adherence to the GAA’s amateur principles.
Members will likewise have the opportunity to suggest ways to safeguard amateur status and express their views on introducing a set stipend for senior inter-county team managers. They may also indicate whether they favor strictly adhering to an expense regulation model.
Feedback will also measure opinions on decreasing the weekly commitment hours required from county-level players, determining the duration of the off-season period, and exploring whether overseas training camps should be allowed.
After concluding this consultation process on July 25th, the ASRC plans to present findings back to Ard Chomhairle in early Autumn seeking endorsement of their proposals. Some suggestions might be brought forward at Special Congress later this year, while further ones could await consideration during Annual Congress in early 2026.
Jarlath Burns, President of CLG, stated: "Given the significance of amateur status as a fundamental principle within the GAA, it is essential that we conduct a review to confirm its suitability for 2025."
I am aware of nobody in the GAA who believes that our amateur status should be eliminated. Nonetheless, we find ourselves in a scenario where the preparation for inter-county teams comes with a price tag exceeding €40 million, which imposes unmanageable pressures on our volunteer-run county committees. Additionally, the time commitments required from players have never been greater.
"Ga bheil an t-ainm a chur ar na h-iomairtean atá ag ár gcomhlachaidh agus ár bpailtiúin riamh mar eile den athbhreithniú seo, cuimhnichidh sinne air. Chan fhacaimid neart iarrtas orthu labhairt." "Gníomhaíocht thabharfar chuig lár an chúrsaigh nua éifeachtach go forleathan sular leanfaimid ar aghaidh leis an staidéar seo. Professor David Hassan, Chair of the ASRC, stated: "The committee conducted an extensive evaluation of the matter and gathered both written and verbal evidence from seasoned professional advisors, scholars, prominent GAA figures, and delegates from various national sports regulatory organizations."
Inevitably, a significant portion of the committee’s efforts focused on financial transactions, the rapid escalation in expenditures by numerous counties for their team operations, along with an urgent necessity to evaluate criteria related to the pressures exerted on the GAA’s amateur athletes.
“A thorough presentation and subsequent discussion took place during the latest An Coiste Bainistiochta assembly, leading to the approval of initiating a consultation process with major stakeholders.”
