The last seven days have been particularly memorable for Boyne AC, marked by impressive displays, heartwarming instances, and a promising outlook for the club’s upcoming years.
Starting from the national scene in Tullamore all the way to the local routes and amidst the high-octane atmosphere of the Leinster Championships, their athletes demonstrated precisely their capabilities.
Things kicked off on Friday last when Hila Raji represented Ballymakenny College at the All-Ireland Schools Track & Field Championships in Tullamore.
Hila delivered a composed and concentrated display in the high jump, successfully leaping to clear an outstanding 1.50 meters, which secured her third place and earned a deserved All-Ireland bronze medal—a significant achievement for her school, her family, and all members of Boyne AC.
The next day, her sibling Hannele Raji entered the same venue, now representing St Oliver’s CC.
Hannele competed in both the shot putt and long jump, placing sixth in each event, and while the results weren’t quite what she was aiming for, her effort and commitment stood out.
On Saturday, during the races through Monasterboice, Seamus Keenan from the club demonstrated exceptional speed and skill. He powered his way to victory, securing the top spot among Juniors in the U18 category at the Monasterboice 4-Mile Run.
Under the tutelage of coach Andrew White, Seamus clocked a time of 24:39, reaffirming his status as one of the most promising young long-distance runners in the area.
But perhaps the most electric energy of the weekend came from the youngest members of the club, who took to the track and field for the Leinster Championships at Tullamore Harriers Stadium. For many of them, it was their first time competing at this level and they rose to the occasion brilliantly.
In the U10 Girls 600m pairs event, Stella Gow and Folasade Chloe Bello Osagie put on an impressive display, securing a bronze medal with their courageous and strategically timed run. Later in the same day, they were back on the track for the sprint pairs competition where they ended up placing fifth overall, showcasing their strength and reliability as a formidable team.
Jessica McMahon stood out in the U12 Girls high jump event, achieving an impressive personal best of 1.20 meters which secured her a fourth-place finish. Although she narrowly missed out on a medal, her display highlighted her promising capabilities.
In the Turbo Javelin, the U11 boys put up an impressive performance. Rasmus Fangeru took the lead with a throw of 14.68 meters, closely followed by Mal Brodigan at 11.27 meters and Conor Hughes at 9.84 meters. Each athlete achieved their personal bests, demonstrating consistent progress and great potential as they look forward to upcoming seasons.
In the U13 Boys 600m, Will Gow put in a strong run, clocking a new personal best of 1:54. Though just shy of a medal, his was a gritty and determined effort.
Caithlin Hughes tackled the U12 Girls 600m race with an impressive blend of determination and calmness. She achieved her own record and concluded with a grin that clearly conveyed her passion for the sport.
The U11 Boys 600m saw two tenacious athletes from Boyne AC compete. Malachy Brodigan delivered an impressive performance in his heat, securing second place, before giving it everything he had in the finals but just falling short of earning a medal. Conor Hughes also put forth a commendable effort and demonstrated consistent skill throughout the race.
In the U10 Boys 600m race, Cormac Brodigan put forth his best effort, securing the 12th position overall. Being only nine years old yet participating at such a high standard makes him undoubtedly someone worth watching out for in future events.
And just as it appeared the day had ended, another spectacular moment emerged!
Right at the end of the Leinster Championships, Folasade Chloe Bello Osagie was back in action, this time as part of the Louth relay team. Running in the final event of the day, Folasade helped secure a silver medal for the team with a flawless run and a smooth handover that brought the team home in style. It was the perfect way to cap off an already fantastic day of competition.
Meanwhile, the countdown is continuing to this Friday’s latest running of the ever-popular SKF Boyne 5K. The action starts at 8pm from St Oliver’s NS on the Ballymakenny Road in Drogheda and runs out towards the countryside area of Townrath, before turning and proceeding back towards St Oliver’s NS for a fast downward stretch to the finish. There are prizes of €150, €75 and €50 for the first three finishers overall in both the men’s and women’s categories, plus a further €150 if the course record is broken. There are also category prizes in the various age groups for both men and women, plus prizes for the top two teams and the top three wheelchair finishers. There is a medal for all finishers, refreshments available in the school, chipped timing and bag-drop facilities, and the event is AAI-approved.
