Sir Chris Hoy has supported early prostate screenings to detect cancer ,saying that his public disclosure has 'saved lives' among men nationwide.
Last year, the six-time Olympic champion shared that he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones .
But far from slowing down, the 11-time world champion track cyclist has turned his attention to campaigning, urging more men to be aware of the dangers of the disease.
'Prostate cancer is the most widespread type among men in England, so I think we should take a more active approach to screening,' he stated. told the Sunday Times. ‘Look at my situation.’
Sir Chris, who is 49 years old, comes from a family with a history of the illness but experienced no symptoms and received no alerts prior to his unexpected diagnosis last year.
‘I would not have got a PSA [blood] test if I’d just gone to a regular GP,’ he said.
'They would have told him, "Return once you hit 50." However, by then, it would've been far too late.'
Prostate cancer typically shows few symptoms during its initial stages, which makes it challenging to detect. The condition is further complicated because men frequently hesitate to talk about this personal health concern, delaying diagnosis until the situation becomes more severe.

Consequently, around 20 per cent of cases – including Sir Chris’s – have already reached the critical stage four by the time they are diagnosed.
This indicates that the tumor has spread to other areas of the body, typically rendering it incurable.
Sir Chris mentioned that his Instagram inbox is filled with messages from men who stated that hearing about his diagnosis motivated them to undergo testing, and many caught it at an early stage as a result. This greatly uplifts him, he added.
To support the Mail’s initiative aimed at reducing prostate cancer fatalities, he stated his preference for the NHS to actively provide men with testing opportunities for the disease, which could stop tens of thousands of unnecessary fatalities .
