Josh Honohan, who has just received a NEW IRELAND call-up, acknowledges that he didn’t play his best match against Galway on Friday. His manager, Stephen Bradley, commented afterwards. criticised the performance .
The manager of Shamrock Rovers expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the 24-year-old player during the scoreless match against Ireland’s head coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson, and assistant John O'Shea, who were observing from the stands at Tallaght Stadium.
Bradley stated following the match, "He was terrible. This is the poorest performance from Josh I've witnessed so far." He continued, "This has got to be his worst showing. Even when he played for Cork City prior to joining us, which would have been before our signing, this stands out as his weakest display yet. It was remarkably subpar."
“It’s not nice, but he’s been brilliant for us. He’s obviously got his call-up, deserved it. He’s doing great, well done, but he was a million miles off what he has been in every aspect, and it’s not good enough.”
When addressing the media in Ireland on Monday, Honohan responded to the Hoops coach's remarks.
"The manager has been with us for quite a few years now, and one major factor behind the club's success is that the manager has established a high standard within the club," Honohan stated to the press.
He sets high expectations, holds everyone responsible, and when someone falls short of those expectations, as happened last Friday, he ensures accountability. That’s his benchmark, and it’s also the one I hold myself to.
The other evening, I wasn't at my sharpest. However, right now, all I'm concentrating on is the following match, aiming to enhance my performance and return to that level.
Honohan denied that the presence of Hallgrímsson and O’Shea in the crowd had any influence on his display.
No, I've mentioned multiple times before that each match holds the same importance for me; I wasn't aware of the manager or John O'Shea being in the stands. My sole concentration has always been on Galway. As stated previously, both individually and collectively, our performance was lacking that day, yet I can't attribute this solely to external factors.
Overall, Bradley has consistently praised Honohan and advocated for his inclusion in the Ireland squad well before it became a reality.
However, the ex-Cork City player wasn’t anticipating an immediate summons and had arranged a vacation overseas during the League of Ireland’s summer hiatus.
“I was planning on going away to Malaga to get a bit of sun, but I’m not complaining, I’m delighted to be here,” he said.
Honohan, who can play wing-back or centre-half, has attracted interest from clubs in the UK, owing to his recent performances for Shamrock Rovers both domestically and in Europe.
Bradley also recently acknowledged It would be challenging to retain this sought-after player, and when questioned regarding the potential transfer, Honohan tactfully responded: "My aim is simply to achieve my full potential as a player."
One could argue that the Carrigaline local has matured later than most, having gained all of his current club football experience here.
I have never visited the UK; I've stayed entirely in Ireland," he stated. "Up until I turned 16, I played for Carrigaline United, where I benefited from excellent coaching. Afterward, I joined the academy at Cork City and had remarkable mentors there as well. I believe this experience significantly contributed to my development.
Being able to play multiple positions has been fortunate for me, as great managers and coaches at the academy supported my development. Later, after joining Cork, I moved to Shamrock Rovers last year. The high standards set by their management team and coaching staff have further enhanced my skills.
The coaching I've received from an early age has consistently been of a very high standard. Although I haven't visited the UK before, I have never seen this as a drawback.
