Dr Suhail Hussain, a private general practitioner, advised individuals to take notice of night sweats, as these could indicate something beyond merely hot temperatures.

He mentioned that sometimes these could be indicators of severe underlying issues like leukemia or lymphoma.

Dr Hussain clarified, "Night sweats are quite prevalent, particularly during warm and humid evenings when they're much more likely to happen."

However, continuous or unjustified night sweats should not be overlooked—especially if they occur along with other symptoms such as weight loss or fatigue.'

With temperatures forecast to rise across the UK in the coming days, many people will experience disrupted sleep and wake up with sweat-soaked sheets.

But Dr Hussain said it's important not to dismiss the symptom outright, especially if it continues once the weather cools.

The appearance of these symptoms ought not to simply be brushed off as 'it’s just because of the heat outside.'

Speaking to The Express Dr Suhail Hussain commented: "Excessive night sweating might indicate a more severe condition, like a significant infection, menopause, or possibly cancer."

'Drenched sweats linked to cancer are typically soaking—a true flood. You might find yourself waking up with your pajamas and bedding thoroughly saturated in perspiration.'

If night sweats occur alongside other symptoms—such as fatigue, unexplained bruising, pain, flushed skin, palpitations, or aching joints and muscles—it's a particular cause for concern, Dr Hussain said.

Sweating throughout the day, regardless of temperature or exertion, is another red flag.

Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, groin, or abdominal area might also indicate blood cancers such as leukemia or lymphoma.

These glands assist in filtering out infections, and inflammation might indicate that your body is battling something more severe.

Moreover, when cancerous cells detach from a tumor, they may get trapped in nearby lymph nodes, leading to swelling.

'Dr Hussain mentioned that other uncommon cancers may lead to excessive perspiration,'

'Certain cancers called carcinoids impact hormone functions through the neuroendocrine system, potentially leading to excessive perspiration.'

The neuroendocrine system consists of neural pathways along with specialised neuroendocrine cells. These cells get signals from the nervous system and then release hormones directly into the blood circulation.

These hormones manage key processes like growth, metabolism, and development.

If cancer develops in these cells, it may change their growth patterns and functions, frequently resulting in overproduction of hormones and unusual multiplication of cells.

This warning comes as a young woman was diagnosed with blood cancer after putting down her itchy skin and night sweats to grief and anxiety, after losing her dad to colon cancer last year.

After experiencing two other worrying symptoms, chest pain and fatigue, Marly Garnreiter, 27, went to her GP for answers.

Her scans revealed a 'big mass' on her left lung and she was subsequently diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma—a deadly type of blood cancer.

Approximately 2,200 individuals receive a diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma annually in the UK, as stated by Cancer Research UK.

Hodgkin lymphoma can occur at any stage of life, yet it predominantly impacts males aged from 20 to 40 years old as well as individuals above 75.
