New Delhi: At the inauguration of the HPCL Presents Times Drive Auto Summit & Awards 2025, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari reaffirmed India's dedication to emerging as a world leader in electric vehicles (EVs) and clean energy sources. He emphasized India's significant 6 million tons of lithium reserves located in Jammu and Kashmir, stressing how this resource could lessen reliance on imported materials and boost indigenous EV battery fabrication. Thanks to these readily available natural resources, India stands ready to establish itself as a leading center for producing EV batteries globally.

The first auction for lithium deposits in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, which commenced on November 29, 2023, at the G3 exploration stage, did not manage to draw the necessary three participants. Despite lowering the requirement so that just one bidder would suffice, this effort too was unsuccessful. To tackle these concerns, the administration intends to push for exploration up to the G2 stage over the coming half-year. Nevertheless, specialists advise that an extensive and meticulous analysis might require a minimum of 24 months. They emphasize that hastening this procedure could lead to yet another unsuccessful bidding round, thereby postponing India’s aspirations regarding lithium even more.
India’s Reliance on Lithium and Its International Setting
At present, India depends completely on imported resources to fulfill its requirement for lithium. In the fiscal year 2023-24 alone, this amounted to approximately $2.9 billion spent on lithium-ion batteries, mostly coming from Hong Kong and mainland China. As electric vehicle popularity continues to rise, ensuring an indigenous source of lithium has turned into a key objective for the country’s strategy.Worldwide, among the 98 million tonnes of recognized lithium resources, merely 26 million tonnes qualify as reserves.
