A person posted on Reddit about feeling let down because their new supervisor reported them to human resources for using too much approved paid time off (PTO). The employee was following the company’s policies regarding leaves but faced repercussions anyway.
On the r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit, the staff member posted the exchange they had with their newly appointed supervisor.
"So far, I have used up 11 days of my annual leave this year. This isn’t out of the ordinary; I took a similar amount last year and my supervisor didn’t mind at all. But now we have a new year—and a new boss—who appears to be upset about me taking such an extensive break," explained the staff member.
Based on their email exchange, the employee’s supervisor showed worry about the quantity of vacation time used and demanded a meeting. Upon the employee explaining that their paid-time-off entitlement encompassed the usual 31 days, plus an extra three days agreed upon in their contract, along with four days rolled over from the prior year, the supervisor decided to involve human resources in the issue.
"The employee mentioned, ‘I subsequently talked with HR, and our discussion was quite courteous, just like during my joining when we agreed on matching my salary along with an additional three vacation days. However, HR seemed rather displeased about having to generate a report, and commented, “Make sure you enjoy your time off. I wish my employer would offer me such complimentary holidays,”’" the worker recounted.
Additionally, the staff member disclosed that their supervisor had earlier alerted human resources about another employee who was intending to utilize all 52 weeks of maternity leave.
The manager who’s based abroad doesn’t have a clue about employees' rights. During a conversation with coworkers where I informed them I’d be taking time off for the remainder of the week, someone mentioned that this very supervisor had reported a colleague to human resources since she intended to utilize all 52 weeks of maternity leave consecutively. Once more, they were told it was unacceptable; however, HR responded saying that she could indeed proceed as planned and would look forward to seeing baby pictures after a year,” shared the staff member.
