Kathmandu, May 8 -- In the national hockey tournament for men, the Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) emerged victorious after beating Gandaki Province with a score of 2-0 in the finals held at the Chyasal Football Stadium in Lalitpur on Wednesday.
The Gandaki team managed to maintain strong defense in the opening period; however, in the subsequent segment, Army's Rajendra Karki succeeded in scoring a goal.
Karki received a long pass from the left flank and blasted the ball over Gandaki's goalie in the eighth minute.
In Gandaki's defense, they were finding it difficult to stop the Army from taking advantage of the increasingly frequent attacks. As the clock approached the 13-minute mark in the third quarter, Pradip Rajbanshi, positioned close to the goalpost, gently nudged the ball forward, giving the Army a commanding two-goal advantage.
Karki received the Player of the Match award. Both Karki and Rajbanshi have played pivotal roles for Army. They appeared on the scoreboard during Army’s match where they secured six goals against APF in the semifinal.
In a similar vein, Karki shared the top spot as the highest scorer of the tournament with six goals. Alongside him was his teammate Kasi Raj Rai, who netted a hat-trick during the semi-finals against APF—the departmental team making their debut in hockey through this event. The captain of Army, Ranjit, received recognition for being the Best Defender, whereas Dev Singh Dhami claimed the title of Best Player.
At the same time, Gandaki's Jason Rai received the accolade for being the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament.
The victory has underscored Army's supremacy in local hockey. The women from Army emerged victorious in their competition on Monday as well. In both championship games, Gandaki found themselves on the losing side.
On Wednesday, Nepal Police Club won against APF with a score of 3-0 in the match for third place.
