Researchers have identified the earliest known proof of humans crafting tools from whale bones.
The remains, shaped into slender missiles used for hunting, were discovered during excavations extending over a hundred years ago in the Bay of Biscay close to Spain and France. Researchers concluded these instruments were from an early era; however, since numerous pieces were merely tiny shards, estimating their exact age proved challenging.
In recent years, technological progress has enabled experts to trace back the age of ancient tools to approximately 20,000 years. According to reports by The AP news, researchers discovered these relics originated from various whale types including blue whales, fin whales, and sperm whales among others.
"Human beings and whales have undoubtedly interacted for an extended period," stated Vicki Szabo from Western Carolina University, an expert in the history of whaling who did not participate in this recent study.
Researchers believe that early humans were making musical instruments from whale bones in regions such as the Arctic and South Pacific. While substantial proof of these whale bone implements dates back around 5,000 years, recent findings detailed in the scientific journal Nature Communications have extended this timeframe further into the past.
The study's lead author, Jean-Marc Petiton from the French National Centre for Scientific Research, suggests that ancient humans didn't primarily focus on hunting whales. Instead, it’s more probable that they used the remains of stranded whales found on shores, crafting durable tools out of their thick bones to aid in hunting animals like reindeer or bison.
The artifacts suggest that early inhabitants in this region leveraged nearby coastal assets for sustenance. It’s probable they gathered mollusks and engaged in fishing activities too. Scientists noted that locating such proof poses challenges due to global sea-level increases altering shorelines worldwide.
“Another testament to the significance of coastal environments for human communities, even from such a distant time,” stated Petillon.
