M42, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, and Gunma University Team Up for Revolutionary Heavy Ion Therapy Innovations
ABU DHABI, 28th May, 2025 (WAM) — M42 and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi have entered into a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with Gunma University in Japan aimed at advancing research and innovation in heavy-ion therapy, which represents one of the cutting-edge and highly accurate methods for treating cancers through radiation.
This partnership emerged during the recent visit to Japan by delegations from M42 and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. The collaboration aims at sharing knowledge, skills, and research findings among these organizations to enhance their grasp of advanced science and expand the practical uses of heavy ion therapy in medicine.
This collaboration extends from the recently formed alliance between M42 and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi with Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS), aimed at setting up the Gulf Region’s inaugural heavy-ion therapy center in Abu Dhabi. By doing so, this project will bring some of the globe’s leading-edge cancer treatments to the Middle Eastern market, thereby establishing Abu Dhabi as a hub for top-tier oncological care and precise medical therapies.
Since there isn’t a heavy ion therapy center within a five-hour flight from the UAE, the new facility—which will be conveniently situated on the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi campus, next to the Fatima bint Mubarak Center, the area’s pioneering comprehensive cancer center—will improve accessibility to this form of treatment for individuals throughout the Middle East.
Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, stated, "Our mission at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is to provide the latest, scientifically proven treatments to our patients. This collaboration with Gunma University perfectly reflects that dedication. Together, leveraging our medical prowess alongside Gunma’s extensive experience in heavy-ion therapy over many years, we aim to enhance both research findings and establish a pioneering phase of oncology treatment within the area.”
President Ishizaki Yasuki from Gunma University stated, "Gunma University has consistently dedicated itself to progressing the field of heavy ion therapy via thorough research and innovative clinical practices."
He stated, “Collaborating with M42 will allow us to extend the outreach of this groundbreaking therapy, promoting global cooperation and making sure that an increased number of patients around the world can take advantage of the most recent developments in cancer care."
For many years, Gunma University has been a leader in radiation oncology and nuclear medicine within Japan. Established in 2005, the Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical Center (GHMC) has played a crucial role in advancing heavy-ion radiotherapy through the combination of radiation biology, clinical research, and state-of-the-art therapeutic techniques.
