JEDDAH — Researchers and astronomy aficionados are gearing up to track the approach of the tiny asteroid named 2025 KX3 as it flies close to our planet Earth. Despite passing at a secure range, this occurrence is attracting attention from international observation stations worldwide.
Eng. Majed Abu Zahra, who leads the Jeddah Astronomical Society, mentioned that the asteroid 2025 KX3, spotted in May, falls under the category of near-Earth objects. Its size is approximately 10 meters across, making it quite petite when contrasted with bigger asteroids that generally do not pose a threat.
He mentioned that based on information provided by NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, the asteroid will come as close as 340,000 kilometers, roughly 90% of the separation between our planet and the moon. This proximity qualifies as quite close, with an estimated velocity reaching up to 45,000 kilometers per hour, which falls into the typical range observed among nearby passing space rocks.
Abu Zahra pointed out that the asteroid is anticipated to come nearest to Earth at 12:15 p.m., according to Mecca Time. He emphasized that tracking these occurrences holds significant value for researchers since each close encounter provides a precious chance to examine the motion of asteroids, understand the traits of their trajectories, and analyze their material structure.
The Jeddah Astronomical Society is an exclusive organization focused on astronomy and space exploration that caters to different groups within society. Its objectives include promoting astronomical knowledge among community members, tracking various celestial occurrences, publishing a bulletin about numerous cosmic events, and translating astronomical materials into easier-to-understand scientific terminology from multiple resources.
