Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali recommends that women shift their focus from depending on conventional medicine for treating cancer towards seeking specialized healthcare services.
Drawing from her own experience with breast cancer , she cautioned that seeking unverified treatments from traditional healers, or 'bomohs' and 'tok bidan,' only delays crucial medical intervention.
Don’t ever put faith in conventional ‘bomohs’ or ‘tok bidan’ who assert they possess remedies for cancer. It’s upsetting that numerous people still rely on these practices and disregard professional medical guidance.
"The Malay community, specifically, is significantly impacted by this dependence on traditional remedies," she mentioned during a discussion held at Prince Court Medical Centre last week.
Dr Hasmah shared her experience battling breast cancer to underscore the significance of seeking timely medical advice.
"It all starts with being aware and taking charge of our well-being. It’s crucial for women to realize that early identification doesn’t just save lives; it also guarantees more favorable results,” she emphasized.
She encouraged women to set up yearly examinations, such as mammograms and ultrasounds, emphasizing that these tests are crucial for timely discovery of potential issues.
“If you sense something isn’t right, do not overlook it. Act at once. Even a minor ache or bump might indicate an issue, and delaying will just make matters more severe,” she cautioned.
Dr Harjit Kaur, a consultant breast and endocrine surgeon at Prince Court Medical Centre, pointed out that the majority of breast cancers do not cause pain, making them especially stealthy.
Frequently, by the time signs manifest and individuals consult a doctor, it might already be overdue.
She emphasized that early identification via tests such as mammograms and ultrasounds is crucial. These processes are simple yet have the potential to save numerous lives.
Dr Hasmah also addressed the stigma surrounding breast cancer, observing that shame and fear continue to prevent women from seeking medical attention.
"Many women pause due to the sensitivity of the region or fear about what the physician may diagnose. However, if God has bestowed upon us this discomfort, He has likewise provided the cure. We must take it upon ourselves to seek out that resolution,” she further stated.
She praised young women who utilize trustworthy online resources to empower themselves with knowledge and boldly pursue medical counsel.
"There has been a constructive change within the younger generation. Numerous individuals are taking initiative, posing pertinent questions to doctors, and assuming control over their own well-being," she mentioned additionally.
Drawing from her own experience, Dr Hasmah credited her bravery and persistence to the unwavering backing provided by her spouse, the ex-two-term Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"When the doctor brought the positive diagnosis report to my house, my husband was disappointed that I hadn’t told him earlier. But he was proud of my determination to get well. His support meant the world to me," she added.
Dr Hasmah fervently encouraged women to place their health and wellness at the forefront of their priorities. She highlighted the significance of conquering fears and stigmas, urging them to take an active role in maintaining their health.
"All women should not be scared. Look for assistance, go for regular examinations, and take control of your well-being. To enjoy a joyful and extended life alongside your loved ones, do away with fear and embarrassment from this path," she stated.
